About this data: methodology
This report analyzes dynamic QR codes created on QRLynx between October 3, 2025 and July 15, 2026, measured as of July 22, 2026. The filtered cohort contributes more than 460,000 code-days of observation, roughly 1,260 code-years. Code-days measure observation time, not scan volume, and are the scale denominator for this report.
One decision matters more than any other in longevity data: censoring. A code created two weeks before measurement cannot show a 90-day lifespan. Every survival window therefore includes only codes old enough to be observed for that full window. One automated account that generated thousands of codes in one month with a very low activation rate was excluded because it represented automated creation rather than ordinary deployment. These figures describe the complete filtered QRLynx cohort, not a random survey sample, and should not be generalized automatically to every platform or placement.
Three limits matter. First, the 94% time-to-first-scan result uses codes created in April 2026 or later because older first-scan timestamps had been backfilled from a later approximation. Second, codes deleted before the measurement date are absent, and permanent deletion prevents us from classifying why they disappeared. Third, each checkpoint is conservative: a code whose next scan arrives after that checkpoint is inactive at the checkpoint even if it is scanned again later.
Definitions make the curve reproducible. A code is still in use at N days if it recorded at least one owner-visible tracked scan on or after day N. Each percentage is a share of scanned dynamic codes eligible for that full observation window. Static QR scans are not visible to QRLynx because they do not pass through a managed redirect. Scan counts, code counts, and code-days are different units and are not divided into one another.

The survival curve: how long QR codes actually stay in use
The shape of the curve matters more than any single checkpoint. Half of scanned dynamic codes in the eligible QRLynx cohort had a tracked scan on or after day 7, 30% on or after day 30, and 13% on or after day 90. Attrition is steepest before the first checkpoint, then the curve flattens.
The data measures observed scan activity, not motive. A code can go quiet because a short campaign finished, a placement disappeared, the call to action underperformed, the destination changed, or the audience no longer needed it. The dataset cannot distinguish those causes. It also does not show the QR format expiring. A static symbol contains no expiry mechanism, while a managed dynamic route depends on its provider, account state, configuration, destination, and physical placement.
The 90-day result comes from the oldest eligible portion of a young platform cohort, so it should be read with the stated window and censoring rule. Future cohorts can extend the long tail, but they should be published as new windows rather than silently replacing this July 2026 result.
Time to first scan: the first week carries the signal
Among eligible codes created from April 2026 onward that eventually recorded a scan, 94% received their first tracked scan within seven days of creation. The median was the same calendar day and the mean lag was 2.4 days. An earlier December 2025 to April 2026 report published 82.1%, but that result used older first-scan timestamps later found to include a backfill approximation. This report withdraws that earlier first-scan value rather than combining incompatible timestamp methods.
A deployed code with no tracked scans after several weeks deserves a review. Check that the intended asset was actually distributed, the code scans at final size, the call to action is visible, the managed route is active, the destination loads, and QRLynx analytics are appropriate for the QR mode. Zero scans alone do not prove which part failed.
Across the full observation cohort, 68.4% recorded at least one scan. Among codes at least 90 days old, 66.9% recorded at least one scan. The older December to April benchmark cohort measured 66%. The windows overlap, so this is a consistency check, not an independent replication.

Which QR types live longest
Activation and longevity are different things, and the table separates them. Digital business card and URL codes lead on activation at 72.0% and 71.3%, a gap too small to rank. URL is the default type, so it carries most of the real deployments. Multi-link pages come next at 66.9% and hold the best survival in the table at 33.3% still in use after 30 days, in this cohort; the dataset records the difference but does not prove its cause.
The digital business card row is the counterintuitive one. Those codes are scanned readily, 72.0% of them at least once, the highest of any type, yet only 18.6% are still in use at 30 days, the shortest active life of the five. Both facts come from the same cause. A business card QR is scanned in the meeting where it changes hands, the contact gets saved, and the job is done. Short life, high completion, by design.
PDF codes sit at the other end of the activation range at 51.2%, which fits how they are used: a document QR is often printed once for a specific audience that may or may not materialise. The smaller categories deserve honesty here: the bio page and business card cohorts are modest, so treat those splits as directional.
Many QR campaigns behave like events, not permanent assets
In this filtered cohort, 52% of scanned dynamic codes completed their observed scan life within seven days of their first scan. The metric describes a burst pattern. It does not say whether the campaign succeeded or failed. A time-limited event, handout, promotion, or one-use task can be complete after a short period.
Another 18% of scanned codes recorded exactly one tracked scan. The event could be a creator test, a single intended user, a lightly distributed asset, or another scenario. The data does not identify the scanner or the campaign goal, so it cannot classify the reason.
For planning, define the expected useful window before launch. A short campaign needs a deliberate ending. A durable placement needs ongoing destination ownership, physical maintenance, and periodic scan testing. Measure each against its own goal rather than treating longer life as automatically better.
What this means before you print
First, keep lifespan and expiration separate in your head. Nothing in this data shows codes expiring; it shows people moving on. Second, the burst pattern is the argument for dynamic QR codes in print. If most campaigns end within weeks but the printed material outlives them, a static code strands the print run the moment the campaign changes. Third, if a code should die on schedule, kill it deliberately rather than letting it rot. Expiry rules can sunset a promotion on a date or after a scan quota, which beats leaving a live code pointing at an expired offer. Test the exact physical proof
Scan the final export at its printed size, material, lighting, angle, and distance using representative devices. Confirm that the expected QRLynx campaign receives the test scan.
Review the first weeks without inferring a cause from counts alone
If a deployed code remains quiet, inspect placement, call to action, scannability, route status, and destination availability. A scan curve records activity, not why it changed.
Update, retire, or preserve the route deliberately
Point an authorized dynamic code to a current destination when the physical asset should continue. Use an expiry rule when access should end. Archive the destination owner and test schedule for durable signage or packaging.
