Methodology — what we measured, what we didn't

The findings in this post combine two data sources: aggregate platform data from QRLynx covering a sample of 1,000+ active QR campaigns over the past 12 months, and cited industry studies from major QR analytics platforms (IMQRScan's 47M-scan dataset, Uniqode's 188M-scan State of QR Codes 2026 survey of 524 marketers and 1,000 consumers, and Supercode's 2026 Tracking guide).

What our platform sample includes

The sample covers active dynamic QR campaigns running on the QRLynx redirect infrastructure. Every QR in the sample passes through our short-URL redirect server (e.g., r.qrlynx.com/abc) at scan time — which is what makes the analytics possible. The campaigns span QR types (URL, vCard, BioPage, MultiLink, social-platform, PDF, payment, Wi-Fi), industries (small business, restaurants, real estate, hotels, schools, gyms, nonprofits, retail, events, healthcare), and surface contexts (stickers, packaging, business cards, posters, vehicles, menus, and several others).

What our sample explicitly does NOT include

Static QR codes are excluded because they're structurally unmeasurable. A static QR encodes the destination URL directly into the QR pattern; the scanner's phone goes from camera → URL with zero intermediate stops. There's no server to log the event, no analytics platform that can retroactively capture it, no third-party tool that can recover the data. We also exclude internal-test scans, automated scanner-validation traffic, and QRs deactivated during the sample period.

Why we cite industry data alongside our own

What you should treat as observation vs prediction

All findings here are retrospective observations from campaign data. According to Uniqode's 2026 study (524 marketers surveyed alongside 188M scan-event analysis), 45% of marketers rank analytics as the most important QR code feature. They want it. They consider it the differentiator. They cite it in vendor decisions.

And yet:

  • Only 36% of marketers deliver information through their QR campaigns despite 75% of consumers wanting it.
  • Only 34% clearly disclose how scan data is used.
  • Only 12% connect QR scans to revenue. The other 88% see the click but never see the dollar.

Why the gap exists (and why most platforms perpetuate it)

Every QR analytics dashboard ships the easy metrics first: total scans, unique scans, scans-by-day-of-week, scans-by-country, scans-by-device. These are the metrics that look impressive in a screenshot. They don't connect to revenue. They tell you the campaign happened — not whether it worked.

Connecting to revenue requires three additional pieces of plumbing that most teams skip:

  • UTM parameters per campaign destination so the QR scan flows through to your analytics platform (GA4, your CRM, your marketing automation tool) tagged correctly.
  • Lead capture or transaction attribution on the destination page so you can match a scan event to a downstream conversion.

Insight #1: The Pareto reality — top 1% of QRs drive 70% of scan volume

The first finding nobody publishing a "QR statistics" report ever leads with: scan volume is brutally Pareto-distributed. In our sample of 1,000+ active campaigns, the top 1% of QR codes generated approximately 70% of all measured scans. The bottom 50% of QRs (by scan count) account for under 5% of total volume.

This isn't a QRLynx-specific pattern. Every analytics platform with public data shows similar shapes — IMQRScan's 47M-scan analysis, Uniqode's 188M-scan study, and Bitly's link-tracking aggregate data all show the same Pareto curve. It's how attention works on the open web in 2026: a tiny number of campaigns get the bulk of engagement; the long tail barely registers.

What's actually in the top 1%

Looking across the high-volume campaigns in our sample, four patterns predict whether a QR ends up in the top performers:

  • Placement matters more than design. The top-performing QRs are placed in high-foot-traffic locations or distributed via channels with built-in scale — restaurant tables in busy locations, viral social posts, paid ad creative, large-format outdoor signage in metro areas. A beautifully designed QR on a low-traffic flyer almost never makes it to the top.
  • Dwell time correlates with scan volume. QRs in contexts where the viewer can pause (sit-down restaurant, transit shelter, in-room hotel materials) outperform QRs in fast-moving contexts (highway billboards, drive-by yard signs) by 5-15× per impression.   • Existing brand demand drives scans more than the QR itself. A QR linking to a known brand, a popular creator, or a familiar product pulls 3-10× more scans than an identical QR linking to an unknown destination. The QR doesn't create demand; it captures it.
  • Channel-of-distribution dominates. A QR shared via an existing audience (creator's mailing list, brand's social account, retailer's checkout flow) outperforms a QR placed in cold environments by another order of magnitude.

What this means for your campaign budget

Stop budgeting QR campaigns on average performance. Build a portfolio of placements assuming most will underperform, and design the campaign around the top performers replicating. Specifically: launch 5-10 QRs per campaign with different placements, measure aggressively in week one, then concentrate budget and printing on the top 1-2 placements. Insight #2: QR type engagement gap — Twitter and BioPage scan 10-30× more than Instagram or Facebook

The second-largest insight in our data is also the least talked-about: QR type matters far more than design choices for predicted engagement. A Twitter QR placed identically to an Instagram QR will receive roughly 10-30× more scans, on average, in our sample. Across QR type categories:

  • Twitter QRs: highest scan rate per code in the sample. Likely because Twitter's native in-app QR feature is buried, so external QRs serve a real navigation need.
  • BioPage / Link-in-Bio QRs: very high scan rate. Creators and small businesses use these for cross-promotion across audiences that already have intent.
  • YouTube QRs: high scan rate. The destination has its own engagement gravity (videos retain attention).
  • URL QRs: high scan volume in absolute terms (about 86% of all scan volume) but the per-code distribution is very wide.
  • PDF, MultiLink, Spotify, TikTok: middle of the pack. Solid scan rates per code with moderate variation.
  • Instagram QRs: very low scan rate per code. Instagram's native in-app QR (the Settings → QR Code feature) handles most of the use cases, leaving external Instagram QRs in a redundant role.
  • Facebook QRs: low scan rate per code. Facebook's QR feature was deprecated for personal profiles and Pages in 2019; only Groups have a native QR. External Facebook QRs are the only path for non-Group surfaces but the engagement is low because users default to Facebook search and direct app navigation.

The redundancy principle

The pattern across these categories is consistent: QRs that compete with native in-app QR features underperform; QRs that fill a navigation gap perform well. Instagram has its own QR — external Instagram QRs are redundant. Twitter doesn't have a discoverable in-app QR — external Twitter QRs serve a real need. Spotify's in-app "Spotify Code" exists but is barely promoted; external Spotify QRs are doing real work for sharing playlists and songs.

If you're choosing a QR type for a campaign, ask first: does the destination platform already have a discoverable native QR feature for the same use case? If yes, your external QR will struggle. If no, you have a clear opportunity.

Facebook QRs are uniquely complicated because Facebook itself sends mixed signals — they removed the QR feature, then partially re-added it for Groups, leaving Pages, Events, and Messenger as the use cases that genuinely need an external QR. What this means for picking a QR type

Three rules from the data:

  • For social platforms with strong native QR (Instagram primarily): use the native feature, not an external QR. The friction of users opening their Instagram app and tapping the QR icon is lower than launching a third-party scanner.
  • For social platforms with weak or no native QR (Twitter, TikTok partially): external QR has a real job. Use a dynamic redirect for tracking; place at high-dwell contexts (newsletters, podcast show notes, conference signage).
  • For URL-based destinations (your website, a campaign landing page): URL QR is the correct choice regardless of social platform considerations. Just point at the right page.

Insight #3: Static QRs contributed 0% of measurable events — by design

This is the finding most surprising to people new to QR analytics: static QR codes are structurally untrackable. Not "hard to track," not "some platforms don't support it." Untrackable. Period.

Why static QRs can't be tracked

A static QR encodes the destination URL directly into the QR pattern itself. When someone scans a static QR:

  1. The phone's camera reads the QR pattern.
  2. The phone's QR decoder extracts the URL.
  3. The phone opens the URL in the default browser.
  4. The browser fetches the page from the destination server.

At no point does the scan event touch a server you control. There's no redirect to log, no event to fire, no analytics platform involved. The scanner's phone communicates directly with the destination web server, and the destination server sees a regular page load — indistinguishable from a user typing the URL manually or clicking a normal link.

What dynamic QRs do differently

A dynamic QR encodes a short tracking URL (e.g., r.qrlynx.com/abc) into the QR pattern. When someone scans:

  1. The phone reads the QR and opens the short URL.
  2. The redirect server (run by the QR platform) logs the event — timestamp, IP-derived country, device, etc.
  3. The redirect server resolves the destination URL from its database.
  4. The browser is redirected to the actual destination.

The redirect step in the middle is where analytics happens. Every modern QR analytics platform (QRLynx, Bitly, Uniqode, IMQRScan, Beaconstac, QR Tiger) is essentially the same architecture: short-URL redirect server in the middle, destination on the other side.

The deployment math

For most non-permanent campaigns, dynamic is the right answer for two reasons beyond analytics: (1) you can change the destination URL without reprinting any materials, and (2) you can A/B test landing pages without re-distributing the QR. The marginal cost of dynamic vs static is the same in 2026 — every major platform offers free dynamic QRs in some volume. Static still has its uses: regulatory information that must be permanent (compliance labels, FDA disclosures), Wi-Fi credential cards where the credentials don't rotate, contact-info QRs (vCards) that are permanently tied to the person. For everything else — campaigns, marketing, anything you'd ever want to measure — dynamic is the choice.

The retroactive recovery question

The most common question we get on this topic: "I already printed static QRs. Can I add tracking after the fact?" No. The QR pattern itself is fixed; the destination URL is fixed; there's no way to insert a redirect server between the scanner and the destination without reprinting. The honest answer is: the analytics on those static QRs is gone forever, and the only path forward is to reprint with dynamic redirects on the next batch.

Insight #4: ~63% activation rate, ~33% repeat-scan rate — the two numbers most platforms hide

Two numbers from our sample that don't appear on most QR analytics dashboards: the activation rate and the repeat-scan rate.

Activation rate: ~63%

Across the QRs in our sample, about 63% received at least one scan during the measurement period. The other ~37% were created, presumably printed or distributed, and never received a single scan in the data we observed. Industry data on QR activation rate is sparse — most platforms quietly suppress this number because it makes the campaign success picture look worse — but the pattern is consistent across what's publicly available: a meaningful portion of QRs are never used.

Why activation rate matters

Average scans per QR (the headline metric most dashboards show) is dragged down by zero-scan QRs. If you have 100 QRs averaging 30 scans each, the headline is "3,000 total scans, 30 average." If 37 of those 100 QRs got zero scans, your active campaigns averaged 47 scans each, not 30. Activation rate matters because it tells you how much of your QR portfolio is even working.

What predicts activation

The QRs most likely to fail activation in our sample share three patterns:

  • Created and not deployed. Many QRs in the dataset are tests, drafts, or campaigns that the user planned but never shipped to a printable file or surface. These are essentially zombie campaigns — the QR exists but lives on the dashboard, not in the world.
  • Deployed in low-traffic surfaces. A QR on a flyer that goes into 50 envelopes will struggle to register meaningful scan volume. The activation threshold is higher than most teams expect.
  • Deployed in surfaces where the QR isn't visible. Folded into a brochure interior, on the back of a flyer that's filed face-up, on a packaging surface that's hidden from the consumer in normal use.

The fix is simple but operationally demanding: before printing, audit each QR placement for visibility and traffic. The 30 minutes spent walking through the deployment plan saves the budget that would otherwise produce zero-scan QRs.

Repeat-scan rate: ~33%

The second metric most dashboards bury or display unclearly: of all scan events, approximately 33% in our sample come from returning scanners — the same person scanning the same QR more than once. A scan-volume number of 1,500 typically represents about 1,000 unique scanners; a number of 100 represents about 67 unique people.

Repeat scans are not noise — they often signal high engagement (a customer returning to the menu QR three times during a meal, a hotel guest scanning the in-room Wi-Fi QR daily for a week, a user who found the destination useful and scanned again to share). But they distort campaign-size estimates if you treat raw scan counts as unique reach.

What to use, not just total scans

For campaign reporting, we recommend tracking three numbers in parallel:

  • Total scans — raw count, useful for trend lines and engagement intensity.
  • Unique scans — by IP-deduplicated visitor, useful for true reach estimates.
  • Time-to-second-scan — for QRs with high repeat rate, the time gap signals whether you're getting return visits (positive) or accidental rescans (neutral).

Insight #5: Industry placement benchmarks — restaurant tables top the list at 72%

For findings that require more scale than any single platform's data can produce, the cited industry studies (IMQRScan's 47M-scan, Uniqode's 188M-scan, the various Bitly and QR Tiger reports) are useful baselines. The placement rankings are stable across these sources.

Top-converting placements (cited industry data)

  • Restaurant table cards: ~72% scan rate (IMQRScan 2026). The highest-converting placement in the entire QR product family.   • Connected packaging: ~14% scan rate (IMQRScan). Substantially lower than restaurant tables but still above most digital ad CTRs. Two design choices independently lift scan rates by meaningful margins (cited industry data, replicated in our sample):

  • Descriptive call-to-action labels boost scan rate by 37% on average (IMQRScan). "Scan to see the menu" or "Scan for the digital tour" outperform unlabeled QRs by a wide margin. The QR alone doesn't communicate value — the label does.
  • Dynamic QR codes generate 36× more scans per code than static QR codes (IMQRScan). Create one unique dynamic QR per placement (not per campaign)

The single biggest mistake teams make is using one QR for everything. If you're printing 50 yard signs, create 50 unique QRs (or 1 QR per sign group) so you can isolate which sign drove which scan. Add UTM parameters to every destination URL

Across our sample, four mistakes account for the majority of cases where teams thought they had QR analytics but didn't actually capture meaningful data.

Mistake 1: One QR for an entire campaign

The marketing team prints 500 flyers, all with the same QR pointing at the same campaign URL. Total scans gets logged, but per-flyer attribution is impossible. There's no way to know whether the bookstore handout, the trade show distribution, or the direct mail batch drove the response. Fix: one QR per distribution channel at minimum, ideally one QR per placement type within each channel.

Mistake 2: Static QR for a campaign

Static QR is appropriate for permanent destinations (vCard, Wi-Fi credentials, regulatory disclosures). For any campaign — anything with a start date, end date, or ROI question — dynamic is the correct choice. The single most common pattern we see is a marketing team picking static "because it's free" and discovering at the end of the campaign that they have no scan data. The marginal cost of dynamic is the same; the analytics gap is enormous.

Mistake 3: Tracking total scans only, not unique-scans-by-placement

The headline metric every dashboard shows is total scans. It's the worst metric to optimize for. If a QR gets 100 scans from 5 visitors who each scanned 20 times, the campaign is essentially dead. If a QR gets 100 scans from 95 different visitors, the campaign is humming. The total-scan number is identical in both cases. Can I track scans on a static QR code?

No. Static QRs encode the destination URL directly into the QR pattern, so the scanner's phone goes from camera to destination with zero intermediate stops. There's no server to log the event, no analytics platform that can retrieve the data after the fact, no third-party tool that bypasses the architecture. If you need scan tracking, dynamic is the only viable choice. The analytics on already-printed static QRs is gone permanently — your only path forward is to reprint with dynamic redirects.

What's the difference between total scans and unique scans?

Total scans counts every scan event, including the same person scanning the same QR multiple times. Unique scans deduplicates by visitor (typically by IP address or browser fingerprint) so each scanner counts once regardless of how many times they scanned. Across our sample, repeat scans accounted for ~33% of total events — meaning unique scans is roughly 67% of total. Are QR scan analytics GDPR-compliant?

Yes, with proper configuration. Standard QR scan analytics typically captures: timestamp, IP-derived country/city, device type, OS, and the QR identifier. None of this is personally identifiable on its own. If your destination page captures personal information (email, phone, name) you need explicit consent — typically via a checkbox on the form. Why do my QR scans not match Google Analytics?

The QR analytics dashboard counts scans (events at the redirect server). Google Analytics counts page views (events on the destination page). The two should be close but won't match exactly. The connection between the two requires the UTM parameters described above — without them, you have two separate data streams that don't link. With UTMs, you can see: scan happened → user landed on destination page → user spent X seconds → user submitted form → lead became transaction. This is the full attribution chain.

What's the difference between dynamic QR and a URL shortener (Bitly, etc.)?

Architecturally similar — both use a short URL that redirects through a server before reaching the destination. The differences: dynamic QR platforms typically render the QR image alongside the short URL (you don't need a separate QR generator), include QR-specific design features (logo overlay, color customization, error correction levels), and often include placement-aware tracking suited to printed-material campaigns. URL shorteners are general-purpose link wrapping; dynamic QR platforms are specialized for the QR-printed-on-physical-surface workflow. Both can produce the same scan data.
