How We Test QR Code Tools

Why this page exists

Our comparison content makes specific claims — "13 generators tested," "5M+ real scans," "sub-50ms redirect latency." This page is the receipt. It documents exactly which products we evaluated, what we measured, where our scan-volume dataset comes from, and what we deliberately did not test. If you're citing our work, making a purchase decision based on it, or pushing back on something we got wrong, the underlying method should be auditable. That's what this page is for.

We do not include enterprise-only platforms that are sales-call gated and have no published pricing. We also do not include products we could not create an account for (sandbox blocked, region-locked, or requiring a corporate domain).

What we measure

Every platform in the listicle is scored on six criteria that matter specifically for dynamic QR codes:

  1. Dynamic code limits. How many dynamic codes the free tier allows, what happens when you hit the cap (deactivation vs. paywall vs. soft-limit), and whether codes survive a subscription cancellation.
  2. URL editing flexibility. How easy it is to change a code's destination after printing. Bulk-edit support, version history, time-based editing, and permission scoping where relevant.
  3. Analytics depth. Total scans, unique scanners, device/OS/browser, geography down to city, time-series resolution, retention window, and CSV/API export.
  4. Redirect speed. Latency from scan to destination — measured from a US East test client against each provider's redirect endpoint. Sub-50ms is achievable on edge-cached platforms; server-rendered redirects typically land in the 200-500ms range.
  5. API and integration support. Programmatic create / update / delete for dynamic codes, webhook availability, and first-party integrations (Zapier, Make, native CRM bridges).
  6. Pricing value. Cost per dynamic code at each published tier. A platform offering 100 codes for $14/mo is treated as better value than 5 codes for $15/mo, holding feature parity constant.

Where our scan data comes from

When our research reports cite "5M+ real scans" — for example in our 2026 QR Code Security Report, Scan Benchmarks Report, and Creator Behavior Report — that figure refers to anonymized scan events recorded by the QRLynx redirect infrastructure and stored in our analytics dataset.

A "scan" is one HTTP request to a dynamic QR redirect URL on r.qrlynx.com that resolves to a destination. We exclude requests flagged as bot traffic by Cloudflare's bot management layer, requests that 4xx before resolution, and prefetch requests (User-Agent and Sec-Purpose header heuristics). All scan analytics is anonymized at ingestion — we record geography at the country/city granularity, device class, OS, browser, and referrer, but never IP addresses or user identities.

The dataset's exact size grows monthly; "5M+ scans" reflects the cumulative count at the time each report was written. Each research report carries its own publication date so the dataset window is unambiguous.

How we collect pricing and feature data

For each competitor we visit the vendor's published pricing page and documentation, record the free tier and entry-level paid tier (typically $5–$30/month), and where possible create a real account on the free plan. Where the free plan is insufficient to evaluate dynamic-QR features, we sign up for the lowest-cost paid plan and run a hands-on test of code creation, analytics, redirect speed, and cancellation behavior. Pricing data carries the date stamp listed in each comparison article (typically "as of [month] 2026").

Where a vendor publishes plan details only to logged-in users or requires a sales call to disclose pricing, we note that limitation rather than guessing.

Known limitations

We are explicit about what our methodology does not cover:

  • We are a competitor. Our own product appears in every ranking. We disclose this on every article, and the criteria above are applied to QRLynx the same way they are applied to anyone else — but a reader should still independently verify any claim that matters for a buying decision.
  • Single-region speed tests. Redirect latency is measured from a US East test client. Median latency from EU or Asia can be meaningfully different — especially for platforms that don't run on a global edge network. We publish US-East numbers because that's where most of our customers scan from; treat the absolute numbers as relative not universal.
  • We do not run controlled UX studies. Our "ease of use" claims come from hands-on use of each product, not from a controlled usability study with external participants.
  • Free-tier limits change frequently. Vendors adjust free-plan caps, feature gates, and pricing without notice. We re-check the comparison data quarterly; the article carries the date of the most recent refresh. If you spot a number that no longer matches the vendor's site, please flag it.
  • Enterprise tiers are partially out of scope. For platforms that gate enterprise features behind a sales call without published pricing, we evaluate what we can verify and note the gap explicitly rather than estimating.

Conflict-of-interest disclosure

QRLynx is a competing product in every comparison we publish. We disclose this at the top of every comparison article and again here. We do not accept payment, affiliate commissions, or sponsored placement to influence rankings or ratings. We do not currently run an affiliate program. Our business model is paid subscriptions, and comparison content is a marketing channel intended to bring readers to QRLynx via organic search.

The editorial team applies the same six criteria to QRLynx as to every other platform. Where QRLynx wins a category, we cite the underlying mechanic (e.g., Cloudflare edge for redirect speed). Where we lose a category, we acknowledge it rather than reframe it.
