QR Type FAQs
Common questions about choosing the right QR code.
What are the different types of QR codes?
QRLynx supports 39+ QR code types including URL, WiFi, vCard (contact card), Email, SMS, Phone Call, PDF, Event/Calendar, Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Snapchat, Spotify), Payment (PayPal, Bitcoin, Ethereum, UPI, Pix), Location (Google Maps), App Store, and specialized types like Menu, Catalog, and Link-in-Bio pages.
Are all these QR code types Dynamic?
No. Some types are static only (WiFi, vCard, Email, SMS, Phone, Text), meaning the data is encoded directly in the QR pattern and cannot be changed after creation. URL-based types (website links, social media, PDF, menu) can be either static or dynamic. Dynamic QR codes let you change the destination and track scans.
Can I change the QR code type after creating it?
Not directly — the QR code type is set at creation. However, with a dynamic URL QR code, you can change the destination URL to point to any content (a PDF, a social media profile, a menu, etc.) without changing the QR pattern. This effectively lets you repurpose a dynamic QR code for different content types.
Do I need a paid plan to use all these types?
No. All 39+ QR code types are available on the free plan for creating static QR codes. Dynamic QR codes (which enable scan tracking and URL editing) require a free account — you get 3 free dynamic codes on the Starter plan. Paid plans ($7-$99/month) offer more dynamic codes and advanced features.
What is the difference between a QR code and a barcode?
A traditional barcode is one-dimensional (1D) — it stores data in horizontal lines and typically holds 20-25 characters. A QR code is two-dimensional (2D) — it stores data in a grid of squares and can hold up to 3,000 characters. QR codes can also store different data types (URLs, WiFi credentials, contact cards) while barcodes are limited to numbers.
Which type of QR code is best for business?
For most businesses, a dynamic URL QR code is the best starting point — it lets you link to any webpage, track scans, and change the destination anytime. For networking, use vCard QR codes. For restaurants, use Menu QR codes. For events, use Event/Calendar QR codes. QRLynx lets you create all types from one platform.
What is a Micro QR code?
A Micro QR code is a smaller version of a standard QR code that uses less space. It has only one finder pattern (corner square) instead of three, making it more compact. Micro QR codes are used on small components like PCB boards and tiny product labels where space is extremely limited. They hold less data than standard QR codes.
What types of data can a QR code store?
QR codes can store: URLs (website links), plain text, WiFi network credentials, contact information (vCard), email addresses with subject/body, SMS messages, phone numbers, calendar events (ICS format), geographic coordinates, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, and app store links. The maximum capacity is about 3,000 alphanumeric characters.
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
A static QR code encodes data permanently in the QR pattern — it cannot be changed and cannot track scans. A dynamic QR code uses a short redirect URL that points to your destination — you can change where it goes, track scan analytics (location, device, time), and add features like password protection and expiry rules.
How many types of QR codes are there?
There are 4 technical types defined by the ISO 18004 standard: Model 1, Model 2 (most common), Micro QR, and iQR. In practical terms, QR code generators like QRLynx categorize codes by their content type — URL, WiFi, vCard, Email, PDF, social media, etc. QRLynx offers 39+ content types covering virtually every use case.
