QR Type Guide
How Should You Use Email QR Codes?
This QR type encodes its final data directly in the QR image. It opens the saved action without a managed redirect, and you create a new QR image whenever that data changes.
Best For
Fixed information and device actions that should open directly from the QR image, with no managed redirect between the scan and its result.
Not Best For
Cases where another QR type is more specific, such as PDF for files, vCard for contact saving, WiFi for network access, or menu QR for restaurant menus.
Before Printing
Test the final QR at real size, confirm the quiet zone, and use the size calculator when the code will appear on signs, packaging, menus, cards, or other printed material.
What the QRLynx Email QR creates
QRLynx creates a direct mailto: URI from the recipient, subject, and message fields. For example, a completed form can encode mailto:support@example.com?subject=Support%20request&body=Please%20help.
Scanning hands that URI to the device. A configured email application or handler can use it to prepare a draft. The scanner reviews, edits, and sends the message, so the QR itself never sends email.
How to create an Email QR code with QRLynx
Build the draft, design the QR, then test the exact final image.
Enter one recipient
Add the email address that should appear in the draft's To field.
Add the subject and message
Use the optional subject and message fields for a short, clear starting draft. The current form supports one recipient, subject, and body.
Customize the design
Choose colors, modules, a frame, and an optional logo while maintaining contrast and a clear quiet zone.
Download the final QR
Registered plans include PNG, JPG, WEBP, and PNG HD. Starter+ and higher add SVG and PDF.
Decode and app-test it
Decode the exported image, compare the recipient, subject, and body, then scan it on every device and email setup you plan to support.
Email fields in the current QRLynx generator
The form intentionally focuses on the three broadly useful mailto fields.
| Field | Current QRLynx Email QR | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient | One email address | The exact To address |
| Subject | Optional, up to 200 characters | Wording and routing reference |
| Message body | Optional, up to 500 characters | Line breaks, punctuation, and instructions |
| CC and BCC | No dedicated fields in the current form | Add them in the opened draft when needed |
| Attachments | Not part of a mailto QR | Attach files in the email application |
How the mailto URI is encoded
RFC 6068 defines the mailto: URI scheme. The recipient follows mailto:. Optional header fields begin after ?, and additional fields are joined with &. The standard identifies subject and body as the fields a resolver can be expected to understand.
QRLynx percent-encodes the subject and message with UTF-8-safe URI encoding. This protects spaces and reserved characters inside the query values. The finished QR should still be decoded and tested because the receiving email handler controls how the URI becomes a draft.
Practical Email QR code uses
Pair each QR with a clear request so scanners know what the prepared draft is for.
Customer support
Prepare the support address and a subject such as Product support request.
Order questions
Ask the scanner to add an order or booking reference before sending.
Event follow-up
Place a prepared inquiry draft on a badge, booth sign, or handout.
Sales inquiries
Route a clear request to the sales inbox from printed material.
Feedback
Provide a short prompt in the message body while leaving room for the scanner's own comments.
Business cards
Offer an immediate email draft alongside a vCard QR when contact saving is also useful.
Test the configured email handler before printing
A mailto URI relies on the scanner's device and configured email handler. Some setups open an installed app, some offer a choice, and others may show the decoded URI when no handler is available.
Test the exported QR on the actual phones, browsers, and email applications your audience is likely to use. Confirm that the draft preserves the address, subject, and message, and that sending always remains a deliberate user action.
Static payload, downloads, and measurement
The Email QR is a direct static payload. The recipient, subject, and message are encoded in the QR image, so saving it to a QRLynx account does not make those fields editable after printing. Create and distribute a new image when the prepared email changes.
QRLynx redirect analytics do not apply to this direct mailto payload, and QRLynx cannot confirm that a draft was sent or received. For an editable destination or visit analytics, use a dynamic URL QR that opens a contact page or form.
Guest use provides static preview and basic raster download with the current guest watermark behavior. Registered plans include PNG, JPG, WEBP, and PNG HD. Starter+ and higher add SVG and PDF.
Email QR Code Questions
What does a QRLynx Email QR code contain?
It contains a direct mailto URI with one recipient plus an optional subject and optional message body.
Does scanning send the email automatically?
No. Scanning can open or offer the mailto URI to a configured email handler. The scanner reviews the draft and chooses whether to send it.
Can QRLynx pre-fill the subject and message?
Yes. The current form accepts an optional subject of up to 200 characters and an optional message of up to 500 characters, then percent-encodes them in the mailto URI.
Can I add CC, BCC, or attachments in QRLynx?
The current Email QR form has fields for one recipient, subject, and message. Add CC, BCC, and attachments in the opened email draft when needed.
Will the QR work with every email app?
Mailto handling depends on the device and its configured email handler. Test the exact final QR with every important device and email setup before distribution.
Can I change the email address after printing?
The direct mailto payload is static. Create and distribute a new QR image when the recipient or prepared message changes. A dynamic URL QR can keep a stable printed link to an editable contact page.
Does QRLynx track Email QR scans or sent messages?
QRLynx redirect analytics do not apply to this direct payload, and QRLynx does not know whether a draft was sent or received. Use a dynamic URL QR and a hosted form when visit measurement is required.
What is the difference between an Email QR and a vCard QR?
An Email QR prepares a message draft. A vCard QR passes contact details to a compatible contacts application. Choose the action your scanner should take.
How should I verify the final QR?
Decode the exported image with the QRLynx scanner, compare the full mailto URI, then test the resulting draft on representative devices and email handlers.
Which download formats are available?
Registered plans include PNG, JPG, WEBP, and PNG HD. Starter+ and higher add SVG and PDF. Guest use provides static preview and basic raster download with the current guest watermark behavior.
