QR Type Guide

How Should You Use SMS QR Codes?

This QR type encodes its final data directly in the QR image. It opens the saved action without a managed redirect, and you create a new QR image whenever that data changes.

Best For

Fixed information and device actions that should open directly from the QR image, with no managed redirect between the scan and its result.

Choose the Right Destination

Match the destination to what the scanner needs: a document to read, contact details to save, a network to join, or a web page to open. Use the related QR types below to compare the available workflows.

Before Printing

Test the final QR at real size, confirm the quiet zone, and use the size calculator when the code will appear on signs, packaging, menus, cards, or other printed material.

What QRLynx puts in an SMS QR code

QRLynx encodes a direct sms: URI. With a recipient and message, the payload looks like sms:+12025550123?body=Please%20send%20details. The message is percent-encoded UTF-8 inside the QR.

The QR does not send a message, subscribe anyone, confirm consent, or contact QRLynx. The scanner and messaging client decide how the recipient and draft appear, and the person still chooses whether to edit or send.

How to create an SMS QR code with QRLynx

Prepare a real messaging workflow, inspect the exact payload, and test the final printed code.

1

Choose an authorized recipient

Use a mobile number or campaign number configured to receive the intended messages. Prefer a global number with a plus sign and country code for an international audience.

2

Write an optional draft

Keep the draft clear and useful if the messaging client preserves it. Avoid sensitive data, promises of consent, or wording that the user should not review before sending.

3

Enter both fields in QRLynx

Choose SMS, enter the recipient and optional message, then inspect the preview. QRLynx builds the direct sms URI and percent-encodes the draft body.

4

Design and label the action

Use strong contrast, a clear quiet zone, and wording such as Scan to draft a support text. State any keyword, eligibility, charge, or consent information outside the code.

5

Download the final file

PNG, JPG, WEBP, and PNG HD are included. PDF and SVG downloads are available with Starter+.

6

Test recipient, body, and send control

Scan the real proof on representative iOS and Android devices. Confirm the exact recipient, check whether the body survives, and verify that nothing sends without a deliberate user action.

RFC 5724 specifies the sms: URI and an optional percent-encoded body field. Android documents SMS and SMSTO handoffs. Apple documents launching Messages with an optional recipient, while its archived URL-scheme reference says not to include message text. This difference is why a prefilled body must be treated as a tested convenience rather than a universal guarantee.

An SMS draft is not consent. For marketing, alerts, contests, voting, or recurring messages, use a properly configured messaging provider and follow the laws, carrier rules, disclosure, age, geographic, opt-in, confirmation, and opt-out requirements that apply to the campaign. QRLynx does not create or store subscription consent through this QR.

The recipient and draft are visible to anyone who scans the code. Do not embed passwords, account details, medical information, payment data, one-time codes, or other sensitive content. SMS, MMS, roaming, premium, or short-code charges depend on the sender, recipient, carrier, plan, route, and country. Do not describe a message as free unless the complete campaign and carrier context supports that statement.

Where an SMS QR code fits

Customer Support

Draft a concise request to a staffed support number and keep phone, email, or accessible support alternatives visible.

Appointment Requests

Prepare a non-sensitive scheduling message without implying that sending it confirms an appointment.

Campaign Keywords

Prefill an approved keyword only after the recipient, provider, disclosures, consent flow, confirmation, and opt-out path are ready.

Event Participation

Draft an eligible vote or response while publishing deadlines, limits, charges, and terms outside the QR code.

Product Enquiries

Use packaging or displays to draft a product code or question to a monitored number, without including customer data in the public QR.

Property Enquiries

Draft a listing reference to a public business number and keep the readable number available as a fallback.

An SMS QR is static and has no QRLynx scan analytics

The recipient and draft are stored directly in the QR pattern. Changing either field requires a new QR and updated material. Because the scan does not use a QRLynx managed redirect, QRLynx records no scan event and cannot confirm that a composer opened, the draft remained intact, the user sent it, the carrier delivered it, the recipient read it, or an opt-in completed.

SMS QR code questions

What is an SMS QR code?

It is a QR code containing an sms: URI with a recipient and optional draft body. A compatible device can open a messaging composer, but the user controls editing and sending.

Does scanning send the text automatically?

No. The QR supplies draft information to a compatible messaging client. The person should be able to review, edit, cancel, or send the message deliberately.

Can QRLynx prefill the message?

QRLynx encodes the optional draft as a percent-encoded body parameter. RFC 5724 defines that field, but scanner and messaging-client behavior varies, so test it on the devices your audience uses and make the workflow understandable if the body is omitted.

How should I format an international recipient?

Prefer the global number form with a leading plus sign and country code. Confirm that the number or campaign route can receive messages from every intended country and carrier before printing.

Can I use an SMS short code?

Use one only when it is assigned and configured for your campaign, country, carriers, keywords, and compliance flow. Short-code availability and formatting are not universal, so test the exact route rather than assuming a five- or six-digit number works everywhere.

Does the QR create marketing consent?

No. Opening or sending a draft is not automatically sufficient consent for recurring marketing. Use an approved provider and the disclosures, confirmation, records, and opt-out process required for the campaign.

Can QRLynx track scans, sends, or delivery?

No. The SMS type is a direct static payload with no QRLynx redirect. QRLynx cannot observe the messaging composer, send action, carrier delivery, reply, conversion, or opt-in result.

Is the SMS QR generator free?

Yes. You can create, customize, and download a static SMS QR as a guest. PNG, JPG, WEBP, and PNG HD are included, while PDF and SVG are available with Starter+.

Can I change the recipient after printing?

Not in a direct SMS QR. Generate and distribute a new code, or use a carefully designed dynamic URL QR when an editable web destination is appropriate.

What should I test before printing?

Decode-check the exact sms URI, then test the recipient, draft body, user send control, charges disclosure, and real print size on representative devices. Use the QR readability checker as an additional image check.
