How Should You Use UPI (India) QR Codes?
Choose static when the encoded information will never change. Choose dynamic when you need to edit the destination after printing, track scans, pause a campaign, or keep a stable short link while the destination changes.
Best For
Campaigns where the scanner expects a focused destination and you may need analytics, design control, or a destination you can update later.
Not Best For
Cases where another QR type is more specific, such as PDF for files, vCard for contact saving, WiFi for network access, or menu QR for restaurant menus.
Before Printing
Test the final QR at real size, confirm the quiet zone, and use the size calculator when the code will appear on signs, packaging, menus, cards, or other printed material.
Why Every Indian Business Needs a UPI QR Code
India has witnessed a digital payments revolution unlike any other country in the world. With over 10 billion transactions per month and 500+ million active users, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become the backbone of commerce in India - from luxury malls to humble street vendors.
A UPI QR code is your gateway to this massive ecosystem. It's the simplest way to accept digital payments - no expensive POS machines, no card swipe fees, no complicated setup. Just print a QR code, display it at your counter, and start accepting payments from anyone with a smartphone.
Whether you run a restaurant, retail shop, professional practice, or online business, a UPI QR code makes you accessible to India's 500 million digital payment users. In a country moving rapidly towards a cashless economy, not having UPI means losing customers.

What a UPI QR Code Actually Encodes: The upi://pay Parameters
A UPI QR code is just a text string in the NPCI deep-link format upi://pay?pa=...&pn=...&am=.... Every value before the QR is generated is a query parameter. Knowing which key does what lets you control exactly what the payer's app shows and whether they can edit the amount.
| Parameter | Key | What it sets | Required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payee Address (VPA) | pa | Your UPI ID / virtual payment address, e.g. yourname@upi or mobile@ybl — the account that receives money | Yes |
| Payee Name | pn | The merchant or person name the payer sees before confirming | Yes |
| Amount | am | A fixed amount in rupees. Omit it to let the payer type any amount (open / "enter amount" QR) | No |
| Currency | cu | Currency code — always INR for UPI | No |
| Transaction Note | tn | A short reference or description shown to the payer, e.g. an order or invoice number | No |
| Merchant Code | mc | Merchant Category Code for verified merchant accounts | No |
| Reference ID | tr / tid | Your own transaction or reference id for reconciliation | No |
Static vs. dynamic in plain terms: with an amount fixed via am, every scan charges the same price (good for a single product or fee). Leave am out and you get an open-amount QR — the same one a kirana counter or street vendor displays, where the customer enters whatever they owe. The QR image itself never changes; only what the payer can edit does. If you ever need to swap the receiving VPA or track scans after printing, encode a dynamic QR that you can re-point later instead of reprinting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UPI QR Code?
A UPI QR code is a scannable code that contains your UPI ID (VPA), payee name, and optionally a fixed amount. When scanned with any UPI-enabled app like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or BHIM, it auto-fills your payment details, making transactions instant and error-free.
How do UPI QR codes work?
UPI QR codes use a standard format (upi://pay?pa=your@upi&pn=YourName&am=Amount). When a customer scans the code, their UPI app automatically populates your UPI ID and name. They just need to enter their PIN to complete the payment - no typing required.
Which apps can scan UPI QR codes?
All UPI-enabled apps in India can scan these QR codes: PhonePe, Google Pay (GPay), Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, WhatsApp Pay, Cred, MobiKwik, Freecharge, and all bank apps with UPI functionality. Over 300+ apps support UPI QR scanning.

Can I set a fixed amount in the QR code?
Yes! You can embed a specific amount in your UPI QR code. This is perfect for fixed-price items, subscription payments, or standardized services. Customers will see the pre-filled amount and can pay with just their PIN.
What is a UPI ID (VPA)?
A UPI ID or Virtual Payment Address (VPA) is your unique payment identifier, like an email for money. It typically looks like 'yourname@upi', 'mobile@ybl', 'name@paytm', or 'name@okaxis'. You can find your UPI ID in any UPI app under profile settings.
Are UPI QR codes safe?
Yes, UPI QR codes are completely safe. They only contain your receiving address (UPI ID), not any sensitive information. No one can withdraw money from your account using a QR code - they can only send money TO you. The 2-factor authentication (PIN) protects all transactions.
Can I use the same QR code for all payments?
Yes! A single UPI QR code with just your UPI ID works for unlimited payments of any amount. You can also create separate QR codes with fixed amounts for different products or services to simplify billing.
